Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship

The Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Award program has aim to support the education and research program of promising graduate students in crystallography-related fields.

The scholarship is awarded thanks to the International Centre for Diffraction Data which offers a number of awards, grants, and honors and the majority of these awards are open to workers in the field of X-ray materials analysis.

Full Description

The program is named after a gentleman and scientist, Ludo who was known as a member of the Dow Chemical Company Spectroscopy Laboratory since 1936 and until retirement, was one of Dow’s top scientists.

Furthermore, Ludo was famous as a world expert in catalysis who had several innovations in the field of powder diffraction.

Ludo Frevel Scholarship is there to honor the science of crystallography which has played a key role in the development of X-ray diffraction and to encourage younger generations to get involved in this quite interesting field of study.

The Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Fund is there to provide financial aid for crystallographically oriented research in the amount of $2,500.

Who's eligible?

So as to be considered eligible for this award, the applicant should be a graduate student enrolled in a graduate degree program with a major interest in crystallography, crystal morphology, modulated structures, correlation of atomic structure with physical properties, systematic classification of crystal structures, phase identification and/or materials characterization.

How to Apply

Multiple recipients are selected on a competitive basis and all applications are to be submitted via the ICDD website.

The online application will ask you to provide the contact information for your primary research advisor who is supposed to submit a one-page letter of recommendation on your behalf.

The guidelines for this letter are the following:

Font Size: 12 points; Margin: no smaller than 3/4 inch.

A description of the candidate’s proposed research – Purpose and rationale for the research, and the proposed methodology.

A curriculum vitae which is including educational preparation, awards, honors received, any work experience and professional activities.

Applications must be received by ICDD no later than 18 October to be considered for the award.

Late and incomplete applications will be rejected even though the applicant is eligible for the award, so make sure you get familiar with the application procedure timeline which might vary each year.
