Jesse B. Smith Memorial Scholarship

The Jesse B. Smith Memorial Scholarship can be used for tuition expenses of four-year undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing degrees in city planning, urban studies, public administration or related field.

It was named after Jesse B. Smith, who was a longtime point man for Jacksonville’s economic development initiatives under four mayors and was known as a Deputy Director of the Planning and Development Department of the city from 1990-1995.

The Jesse B. Smith Memorial Scholarship Review Committee decided that the scholarship amount is $1,000 and we believe that it is worth considering.

Who's eligible?

When it comes to the eligibility requirements for the Jesse B. Smith Memorial Scholarship, here are some basic guidelines that each interested student needs to follow prior to applying.

The scholarship is available to any resident of Duval County or any area of Jacksonville, including Baldwin, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach, who is currently enrolled in or has been accepted into any higher education institution located in the county.

If you are eligible, you are suggested to apply and try your luck, so you might become one of two (2) recipients for the upcoming academic year.

Here are some application requirements determined by the scholarship committee so that they can make an easier and the right decision who really deserves this scholarship.

Applications for the Jesse B. Smith Memorial Scholarship must be received by the Planning and Development Department no later than Friday, May 24th.

In order to be considered for the award, the applicant must submit a completed application form and all its components, including academic standing, extracurricular involvement, and letters of reference.

One of many questions you will be asked during the application process is: Why did you choose to study in the areas of city planning, urban studies, public administration, or a related field, and how do you expect to apply this education?
