The Mary Lou Marks Smith Scholarship

The Mary Lou Marks Smith Scholarship is designed to be awarded to a community college student majoring in horticulture, floral design or other gardening related fields with the aim to financially support his/her education.

Horticulture-based education is supported by the Garden Club Federation of Maine, GCFM Districts and GCFM local garden clubs and they are aware of the fact that today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow.

Full Description

The Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, will be given every other year, and the money will be mailed to the college at the beginning of the second semester.

The number of winners is determined each year depending on the number of eligible and quality applications and the availability of the funds.

If you happen to be the lucky recipient of the Mary Lou Marks Smith Scholarship, you will be invited to attend the Garden Club Federation of Maine Awards Luncheon in June.

Who's eligible?

In order to be eligible for the Mary Lou Marks Smith Scholarship besides being a community college student majoring in horticulture, floral design or other gardening related fields, you must be is a legal resident of the State of Maine.

How to Apply

The scholarship committee determined not only the eligibility requirements for the award but the application process as well.

Applicants should download the one-page MLMS application form, which can be found on the Garden Club Federation of Maine website and fully complete it with hones and accurate answers to the questions.

As supporting documentation to the application form, the applicants are required to attach:

A personal letter which will not exceed two typed pages and in which he/she will discuss goals, background, financial need, and personal commitment and a list of extra-curricular activities.

Also, the applicant must submit three letters of recommendation, one typed page each.

It must include scholastic ability, personal reference, and work-related experience

Application form, grade transcript, letters of recommendation, personal letter by the applicant and a list of activities must be received by the Scholarship Chairman by February 1st.
