The main purpose of the Norma Ross Walter Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to female high school graduates of Nebraska, who are planning to enroll as English majors at accredited colleges or universities.
The scholarship is named after Norma Ross, who was a lover of Cather and frequent visitor to Red Cloud and the recipients are supposed to further Cather’s legacy and to support the next generation of Cather readers and scholars.
There will be three lucky recipients each year and the awards are different:
The first-place recipient will get $2,500, the second-place recipient will get $1,750, while the third-place recipient award will be $1,250.
The scholarship is not renewable and the award is payable at the beginning of the first year of college.
So as to be eligible for this award, the applicants must meet the eligibility criteria which involves that the applicants must be female high school seniors, who plan to continue their educations as English majors in accredited colleges or universities.

The selection will be based on the intellectual promise, creativity, and character of the applicant.
How to Apply
Those people who determined their eligibility should also know the application requirements.
These documents must be included with your application for the Norma Ross Walter Scholarship:
- High School Transcript
- Three letters of recommendation
- The five-page application
- Page 4 of the application essay stating the reason to be an English major
- Original 1,500-word essay about several of Cather’s short stories or on one of Cather’s novels.
The recipient will be invited to read her essay at the Willa Cather Spring Conference in Red Cloud on the first weekend in June.
