Against the Grain is the organization which provides financial support to Asian American college students and offers four  scholarships per year with specific requirement.

Depending on your preferences and eligibility, you may apply for:
1. Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship
2. Against The Grain Groundbreaker Leadership Scholarship
3. Lyly Koenig Mendez Memorial Scholarship
4. The Lily Pabilona Emerging Entrepreneur Award

What is unique for all scholarships is that applications and necessary documents should be submitted by Monday, May 6.

Full Description

It is important to note that Scholarship Winners will be required to send a 1 minute “thank you” video to the organization.

The given scholarship cannot be sent directly to the recipient, but would be sent to the educational institution in the student’s name.

 

Who's eligible?

There are eligibility requirements for this scholarship and they are the following:

The applicant has to be of at least 25% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S.

He/she has to be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. educational institution and must be an associate/bachelor/master degree seeking student pursuing a major in the visual/performing arts.

These arts include film, theater, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.

Furthermore, he/she has to demonstrate leadership abilities and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

How to Apply

If you want to apply for the artistic scholarship you will need to write a 750 words essayon the topic related to the effect of art on changes in a community.

You should also provide a short answer consisting of 3 to 4 sentences to the questions: “What does it mean to you to go Against The Grain? How do you go Against The Grain?”

The application will not be complete without your artistic portfolio and the files you send should be 3 to 5 minutes long.

Those applicants who have the highest quality of content, great academic performance and leadership/community service experience would have advantage over other applicants.

Letters of recommendation are also suggested and highly recommended to be included in the application documentation.
