The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers this outstanding scholarship to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What the winner will get is financial support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, and paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation.

Full Description

The scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed up to four years, which the applicants consider an amazing opportunity.

The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year and that amount can be used for tuition, educational expenses, and living expenses.

Who's eligible?

The interested applicants must meet all of these requirements in order to be eligible for applying.

The applicant needs to be a U.S.A. citizen or U.S.A. permanent resident who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited 4-year undergraduate institution located in the United States of America.

He/she has to possess the undergraduate University Grade Point Average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0-point scale or within the top 5 percent of his/her class

Last but not least, he/she has to have ‘Exceptional Financial Need’ as certified by the undergraduate institution financial aid office.

You are not eligible for the NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program if:

  • You are a high school senior
  • You have been awarded an undergraduate degree
  • You are enrolled in an advanced degree program, such as a master’s degree

If you are unable to fulfill the requirements you are suggested not to apply.

How to Apply

All eligible applicants would like to get familiar with the application information.

The Application process opens in January 2019 and your university is the one which needs to determine whether you meet the required exceptional financial need (EFN) criteria for this award.

You will need to download the EFN form, complete the top section and submit it to the financial aid office at the university you will attend and they will send the form.

The deadline for the university to submit the applications is March 18th, while the letters of application can be sent until April 2nd.

Sometime in Mid-June, the selected finalists will get the invitations to a Phone Interview and after it, in Mid-July, the Selection of Scholars will be made.
