The Leonard Bernstein Fellowship is named after a founding member of the Brandeis University arts community.

The great award of $20,500 renewable scholarship which can be renewed for up to a maximum of eight semesters is a reason amazing enough to try your luck and apply for it.

Full Description

In order to maintain the fellowship, you must remain in good academic standing, meaning to achieve a 3.0 or above grade point average at least once in the first two semesters of study at Brandeis, and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average each year thereafter, plus declare a minor in music.

The application will be judged by the members of the faculty of music and fellows will be notified of their award before April 1st.

Who's eligible?

Only a very small number of accomplished vocalists and instrumentalists are selected to take part in this highly competitive program.

If you are wondering about the eligibility requirements we have to mention that all Leonard Bernstein Fellows are required to declare a minor in music by completing the following Music Department courses: One year of Music Theory and Two semesters of Music History.

When the Performance Requirements are in question, instrumentalists must have four semesters of performance in a Music Department ensemble in addition to LBF chamber ensemble performance, while vocalists must have eight semesters of performance in a Music Department ensemble in addition to LBF chamber ensemble performance.

Those who consider themselves eligible are highly encouraged to apply, as the scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis.

On the other hand, ineligible applicants will not be taken into consideration and should not waste their time applying.

How to Apply

If you consider that your musical accomplishments and skills are good enough to be able to get this award, you should send your application with a portfolio through SlideRoom via the Common Application.
