The scholarship is named after Dr. Hsiao’s who struggled to get higher education as a young graduate student from China while having to face financial difficulties.

He devoted his life to giving back to those in need.

The Hsiao Memorial Economics Scholarship was established so as to help graduate students attending an accredited U.S. college or university, who struggle with financial needs and cannot reach their higher education goals due to that situation.

Hsiao Memorial Social Sciences Scholarship awards one person with non-renewable $1,000.

Who's eligible?

If you are interested in Hsiao Scholarship, you first need to be sure whether you are eligible for it and only then apply.

The eligibility criteria are the following:

You have to be a graduate student attending US-based college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

You have to be pursuing a graduate degree in the social sciences, economics preferred but not required.

You should know that you are supposed to do research and the preference will be given to topics that benefit those in social/economic need, especially Asian and Asian American communities.

When the residency requirements are in question, applicants have to be US citizens, residents or foreign nationals.

He/she has to prove financial need, as it is a need-based scholarship.

The committee will determine the winner according to the following selection criteria:

  • Academic excellence
  • Graduate-level
  • Financial need
  • Research topics
  • Strength of professional recommendations

How to Apply

Applicants should submit all materials to the Asian Pacific Fund by the deadline.

The complete applications consist of:

  • Completed student application form
  • Essays
  • Most recent transcripts of grades
  • Resume with work experience, school activities, community service, honors & awards
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a current professor
