Elmer Carvey Scholarship

The Elmer Carvey Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Elmer Carvey who was known as an active member of the SCCAVS from 1964 until 1982 and who made great contributions to this organization.

The great thing to know about the Elmer Carvey Scholarship is that there are two winners each year who get a $1,500 stipend for one year and it can only be used for tuition payment.

It is very significant to remember that completed applications must be received by July 1st being that late and incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration.

The lucky recipients will be notified by August 1st.

Our suggestion is not to submit the application if you are not eligible for the award.

You should first get acquainted with the eligibility requirements, and apply only if you meet them.

Who's eligible?

Applicants who will be considered eligible for the Elmer Carvey Memorial Scholarship are undergraduate students attending public, four-year colleges in California.

Students who are pursuing a degree in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering and whose desired career goals are in areas of interest to the society are highly encouraged to apply for the Elmer Carvey Scholarship.

Areas of interest to the society include vacuum-related technologies, coatings, surface and thin film science, nanotechnology, the understanding of materials properties, and the development of new materials.

Also, the scholarship is available to high school seniors and current college students.

How to Apply

Once you determine your eligibility and you decide to apply, you are supposed to send the application form along with the following supporting information to one of the scholarship provider’s address.

The additional documentation that has to be provided with the application form are your current transcript, preferably official, one letter of recommendation written by a science teacher or research advisor, your statement which will not be longer than one page in which you will be describing your involvement in an area of interest to the SCCAVS, as well as plans for future studies or career.
