American Atheists are organized to support students’ activism by awarding scholarships and the winners of scholarships are determined based on his/her activism.

American Atheists awards numerous scholarships and those are:

  • two $1,000 O’Hair Scholarships
  • four $500 President’s Scholarships
  • and two $500 Chinn Scholarships for LGBT Atheist Activism.

The winners of the scholarship are determined by the leadership of American Atheists or the delegates they choose.

The recipients of the scholarships would definitely be those students who have the greatest impact and who offer the strongest support to American Atheists or the atheist community as a whole by starting an atheist group or fighting against violations of the separation of religion in their school.

Who's eligible?

There is certain criterion that has to be met in order to be able to get the scholarship.

It is designed for current college or vocational students or high school students who are enrolling the college in the year to come.

Also, full-time graduate and law school students are encouraged to submit their applications as they are eligible for the scholarships, too.

Furthermore, the applicant must be an atheist and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5.

The applicant is not required to be a member of American Atheists to apply for a scholarship, but must become one if he/she wins the award.

All applicants can become members of American Atheists community without paying the fee during one year.

No matter which race, ethnic group, gender, and sexual orientation you belong to, you are encouraged to apply considering the fact that applicants are judged based on their actions as atheists and activists.

How to Apply

Besides submitting the scholarship application, which can be found on the website, you will have to add a 500- to 1000-word essay, where you should speak about your activities, motivations as an atheist.

The essay should be sent to scholarship@atheists.org by March 15 for consideration.

You have to attach a file with your essay, and not to write it in the body text of the email.

The requirements related to the essay file are that it should include your first and last name.

Additionally, all sent photos and scans have to meet the required resolution and size.
