AMS Father James B. Macelwane Awards

The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award was created by the American Meteorological Society with the aim to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J. and it was named after him.

He was known as a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University.

A stipend of $1000 is awarded thanks to member donations to the AMS 100th Anniversary Campaign.

Full Description

The main goal of this award is to inspire interest in meteorology among college students.

The award recipient will be notified in August.

If you happen to be the recipient of the AMS Father James B. Macelwane Awards, you will get a $1000 stipend and partial travel support to the AMS Annual Meeting.

Who's eligible?

What eligible applicant needs to do so as to get the opportunity to receive this scholarship is to submit his original student paper concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences.

The eligible students are those who are enrolled as an undergraduate at the time the paper is written, and no more than two students from any one institution may enter papers in any one contest.

How to Apply

Eligible applicants are required to submit an application form and supporting materials, so as to be taken as possible scholarship winners.

Applicants should sign into the submission portal, meaning that they will need to create their AMS information/password.

Once they sing in, they need to find the award button saying “Macelwane” and then click on it.

They need to make sure that all application tasks are complete in order to submit the application before the deadline date.

The Macelwane Award supported by the AMS Committee of Judges must receive the following supporting documentation:

  • a pdf copy of the original paper,
  • an abstract of no more than 250 words,
  • a letter of application from the author, including mailing address and email, stating the title of the paper and the name of the university at which the paper was written, and
  • a letter from the department head or other faculty members of the department, confirming that the author was an undergraduate student at the time the paper was written.

The application process finishes on 5 June.
