Outdoors Writers of Kansas–Harper Memorial Scholarship

The Outdoors Writers of Kansas–Harper Memorial Scholarship is named after one of the best-known Kansans of his time, Steve Harper.

He was famous for his photographs and words, being that he was a photojournalism instructor at Wichita State University, the Wichita Eagle’s photography editor and the newspaper’s outdoors writer and photographer.

Full Description

The committee offers a $1,000 scholarship which is sponsored and funded by the Kansas Wildscape Foundation and the Outdoors Writers of Kansas.

This is a group of journalists, photographers, and artists who keep on sharing the greatness of Kansas outdoors through their work and want to encourage younger generations to join them in their mission.

Being that only one winner is selected, you are suggested to provide the best possible work samples and quality supporting documentation so that your chances of getting this award are better.

Who's eligible?

As you are reading this you are probably interested in the eligibility requirements for the Outdoors Writers of Kansas -Harper Memorial Scholarship.

The eligible candidates are graduating seniors enrolled in a Kansas high school that plan to attend a college in Kansas and study wildlife or nature-based curriculum or outdoors journalism.

The award is also available to university students who are enrolled in wildlife or nature-based curriculum, or pursuing outdoors journalism.

Scholarship recipients are selected without regard to race, color, religion, or sex.

If you happen to be the applicant chosen as the recipient of this scholarship, you will need to show proof of full-time enrollment.

If you do not meet the requirements you are not encouraged to apply, as your application form will not be taken into consideration.

How to Apply

Now, that you have determined your eligibility, you need to think about the application process.

Besides the completed application form with accurate answers to the required question, you will have to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach or employer.

You should also send examples of your work.

The completed application and all of the above mentioned supporting documents must be sent before April 15th to the following address:
