The ExpressVPN Future of Privacy Scholarship

Three annual scholarships for high-school, undergraduate or graduate students created to increase awareness regarding basic online security and privacy rights.

Express VPN is a virtual private network founded in 2009 helping individuals or institutions to use Internet with security, privacy and freedom.

They offer three scholarships, with a total value of $4,000 (first place $2,500; second place $1,000; and third place $500) to high-school, undergraduate or graduate students. The winners will be featured on a variety of online platforms, giving them a unique opportunity to improve their curriculum and become prominent voices in current debates regarding Internet privacy, digital rights, encryption and censorship.

The applicants are required to write a 450-600 words essay (in English), by choosing one out of the three available topics (We Own the Future, Privacy Advocates, Privacy in Real Life).

The quality of the essays will be judged according to their authors’ capacity to formulate and justify their views through clear and articulate writing and usage of logical and organized argumentation.

The deadline for the application is August 31, 2024 and the winners will be notified on October 14, 2024.

Who's eligible?

Applicants should be enrolled in an American high school, or pursue an academic undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university in the United States.

The age and citizenship of the applicants are not relevant for their eligibility.

How to Apply

The applicants must submit by email their essays by August 31, 2024 and include the following additional information:

  • Name of the applicant
  • Name, address and contract details of his/her school, college or university
  • The essay topic selected (1, 2 or 3)
  • The applicant’s current grade level

Each applicant is allowed to submit a single ORIGINAL essay, which must pass a Copyscape test. In case of plagiarism, the applicant will be instantly disqualified.
